Media.
It’s a funny thing.
You must be perfect, or else
You’re no longer a human,
You’re a thing.
You must be “thick” or an “hourglass” shape.
It’s everyday labels,
That you cannot escape.
Most people cannot comprehend that perfection is impossible.
It makes me feel bad,
So sorry that it becomes comical.
Thank God that there is a solution to the unrealistic standards,
For God is my light and always my accepting savior.
He let’s me know that nobody is perfect,
And imperfection,
That,
He has an exception .
So if you’re ever feeling down, or unworthy,
Just remember that there is no need to worry.
God wants you to embrace your oddball like features,
Because those are the automatic keepers.
Thickness is usually inherited,
Hourglasses are for telling time,
Everyone is different,
Being like everyone else would just be a crime.

I’ve realized at point you wanted me.
You loved me with everything.
Then one day everything changed.
You don’t love me anymore.
Yeah, my heart’s broken and
Yeah, my crown has fallen on the floor, broken in pieces.
And I hide everything with this smile everybody hates to see.
I put in too much work to end up hurt, broken and unwanted again.
I feel like I’m the type to open up and tell everything.
I grew ‘cause once in life
I could tell you what’s wrong in a heartbeat.
Now when someone asks,
I just say “Ooh, nothing. I’m perfectly fine.”
And the funny thing is
I have the biggest smile on my face.
I feel like writing expresses me
And it helps me get 25/100 things out.
All the butterflies I once had in my stomach are dead
That huge red heart I once had is now black.
It may be black but I still try to love
And I would never treat anybody dirty ever.
I put everybody before me.
Everybody’s feelings and everything else
I put it first than when it comes to me, it’s whatever.
Life is so messed up.
You don’t even know who you can and cannot trust.
It seems like everybody is against you.
It’s like you have everybody pointing a gun at your head.
They say it’s depression, anxiety or a mental illness
But you can’t call nobody crazy
If you are NOT in their shoes
Or if you never have been.
You don’t understand how it feels
Deep down inside even though I’m smiling.
They always want you when they want something
But other than that nobody needs me.
It’s like drowning in an ocean
And nobody is there to save you.
So you just drown deep in an ocean
With nobody there to save you.
But this ocean I’m drowning is not water.
It’s made of hate, being unwanted and all my other thoughts.
No matter how fast I swim and I try to get away,
It’s always this dark flood that pulls me in deeper and deeper.
So remember you don’t need water to feel like you’re drowning
And everybody else is in my face pointing the fingers, laughing at me.

Daddy
(1st Place)
by
Alaina Gordon, 7th grade
A normal night
Daddy says his last goodnight
The last bat of his eyelash
A blowing of a kiss
And the blue ribbon choking his last breath.
I knew from that point on
Heaven gained another wonderful person.
Even though I was two
I still remember that day.
When I too died inside
But I know I will see him one day.
Behind those pearly gates.

The sunlight peers through the stained glass,
the students complain about the sun,
the teacher complains about the students.
The bell rings and the students run and wiggle,
the hallway is crowded as a traffic jam happens,
just a normal day in school or is it.
One boy notices the change early on,
the lunch room was not as crowded as normal,
he was finally able to sit on a seat in a table.
The lunch was cold and dark,
but the students just ate,
the boy does not eat the food.
He figured out that he did not like it,
the time is 12:05, bully time,
the bullied kids are starting to walk out of the room.
Then the boy realizes it no bullies,
that makes the whole day a not normal day,
the boy starts to relax finally.
The alarm clock goes off,
beep, beep, beep, beep,
the boy realizes it was just a dream.

Dear Best Friend,
Me: Just what?
Imaginary Friend: What?
Me: Today we had a Math Test and I got a B+. Like I’m supposed to get an A. Like I only missed on questions.
Then they cancelled the Fall Dance today. That’s even worst. Uhhhhh…...Does this day get any worst?
IF: They cancelled? I didn’t even know.
Me: Of course you didn’t know. You’re a person in my brain.
IF: Well, I ain’t helping you out.
Me: Nooo! Now you are being so frustrating right now. I wish you can go away right now.
IF: Hey don’t put this on me.
Me: Oh when I went home I got my phone taken away for changing the channel.
IF: You need to quit lying all the time. The reason you got your phone taken
away was because you took your sister’s candy and ate it.
Me: Shut up! You ain’t supposed to tell nobody.
IF: Well, it’s too late. I forgot.
Me: How do you forgr...Matter of fact, let me not go there.
Me: Best frann.
IF: Stop right there and correct your grammar. It’s ‘best friend’.”
Me: Sometimes you act like my mom.
IF: Anyway my mom got me some new Jordans.
Me: They fake Jordans because you’re just imaginary.
IF: Don’t you got homework to do?
Me: No, we didn’t have homework this week.
IF: You’re 9 years old and you got an imaginary friend. Me!
Me: Well, you lucky to be alive.
IF: Whatever...But I’m thankful.
Me: Alright then.
IF: So do you want to play hide and seek?
Me: How, if you’re in my mind?
IF: Pretend that I’m standing up and just look and star and keep imagining.
Me: OMG! I see you. Okay. Let’s play

The Hurricane: Texas Seeking Havoc through Southeast, North America
(Runner Up)
by
Morgan Graham, 6th grade
“Why,” they cluelessly asked themselves, wondering why this huge mass of water had to struck them. The people of Texas was desperately waiting for a hand of help to come save them. Think of the children and women swimming for dear life, no food, no shelter. Being unprepared was way worse than forgetting to bring a pencil to school. It was like a sinking boat of kids who didn’t know how to swim and had no life jackets, or safety boats, stranded nowhere. What is worse is knowing it will come back again.
Have you ever thought about a natural disaster and it’s definition. According to Google, “A Natural Disaster is a natural event such as a flood, earthquake, tornado, or hurricane that causes great damage or a loss of life.” Hurricane Harvey hit Texas and caused great damage and loss of lives. On August 26, 2017, Hurricane Harvey took place, it struck like lightning, pouring loads of water on innocent homes and people, seeking havoc through the state, physically and economically. Luckily, charities such as the Red Cross has been the main helping hand. Did you realized it all comes back to reality, that Hurricane Harvey isn’t the only hurricane to ever make history?
In addition to Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma is about to take place. If you haven’t heard it is hurricane season. Keep in mind that hurricanes are sort of like earthquakes, you never know when one might take place. Although scientist have figured out Hurricane Irma, you can never be 100% sure of what nature has in store. Hurricane Irma is mostly taking place in the Caribbean on its path to Florida. Currently in the Virgin Islands heading toward to Miami beach. My point is not about the fact that it has ruined and cost damage--my point is that natural disaster just happen. We can’t control it because it is nature. We can control how we react and respond, and how we think.

The Dream Team
(Classroom Poem Winner)
by
By, Ms. Kohler and Her 1st Period: Gabe A., Josh B,. Morgan, Andrew, Kelly, Addalyn, Chloe, Blake R.,
Mason S., Brennan, Natalee, Geetangeli, Rosie, Max, Adaisha, Ali, Abby, Rose, Dramaan, Emily R,
Alexis, Emery, Calvin, Kiyami
From different areas fresh voices come together
To make Carver even better
Our mascot is the cat
Unfortunately it isn’t black
The Wildcats have the best team in 6th grade
Tickets, tallies, tokens with RESPECT we have made
Team RESPECT students rock
Make sure learning never stops
We live and love learning
Those rewards we be earning
We dab on them haters
Make them our motivators
Enjoying the fact our teachers have different ways
To fill middle school with the most memorable days
Mrs. Davis keeps the fun math energy going, so even decimals aren’t boring
Mr. Landrum doesn’t accept science fails, and entertains us with unbelievable tales
Ms. Melton is the ELA bomb, she so cool it helps us stay calm
And bringing social studies on the scene, is Ms. Kohler AKA “ The Black Cat Queen!”
Our teachers even show us funny memes
Because we are an uh-mazingly weird team
Team RESPECT students and teachers working as a family
Supporting each other at every opportunity
Even if some think it isn’t cool
RESPECT makes Carver a one of a kind school
