1st place: 8th grade (Fall 2014)
XS
By Brianne Sturkie
I live in a world
Where I’m four sizes bigger
Than a large majority of girls
Since when is it wrong
To have a stomach
To have big thighs
I’m tired of the world that you’re shunned
For being a size 5
That if you don’t look like a board
And can see your rib cage
That you don’t have a thigh gap
Or noticeable hip bones
That makes you so wrong
I cannot fix my size
I will not try to be a small
I am so much better than that
I refuse to be

Me
by Kylah Amos
I want to be set free
I want to fly high like a bird
I want to swim fast like a shark
I want to be anything but me.
I don’t want to be a blue eyed blonde
I don’t want to be part of a split family.
Two moms and two dads
I don’t want to be me
I want to be an actress
With tons of money and fast cars
I want to have a closet full of clothes
I don’t want to wear the same things all the time
I don’t want to be me.
I want to have a family that celebrates together, not apart
I want a mom and dad that don’t fight
I don’t want to be me
I want to be able to want to be me.
3rd Place: 8th grade (Fall 2014)
Brave
by Madison Isenhour
It’s fine to lose your mind
If you don’t know the way.
It’s fine to tell yourself
That you’re fine anyway.
But when you can have the courage
To stand up and not lie.
When you tell the truth
Even when you feel like you’re losing everything.
That’s brave.

Don’t Be Afraid
by Jackie Thompson
Don’t be afraid to let your feelings show.
Because you have friends that will never let go.
Don’t be afraid to go your own way.
Don’t be afraid to stay.
Don’t be afraid to be who you are.
Although people may not see it, you’re shining star.
Don’t be too shy.
It’s okay to cry.
Don’t be afraid to make the date.
One day you will step up to the plate.

For You
by Kelindria Woods
My pain is from your love.
At first I thought you were
An angel sent from above.
My tears shatter as they fall to the floor.
Please let me in,
Don’t shut another door.
I hate our arguments, I do not like to fight
I want our relationship to work
Out alright.
So take my hand in faith and have my trust
As you go
and fade away into the dust.
Our memories will be treasured forever as they are treasure
And the more and more we grow,
The bigger the measure.
This is not a war, so hear me out
I want to show you what
Love is all about.
So let us have some hope
And keep
Climbing up the rope.
I don’t want a present or a gift.
Your love is my present as it makes
My spirits lift.
